Sankt Göran

Recently releasing a record with Bear Funk, Sankt Göran shows a promising preference for synths, electro, and Baleric beats. I'm more acquainted with his uncanny ability to blend house, techno, and disco on the decks. When he sent me a Visions St Gran remix a month ago, however, I sat back, listened over and over, and grinned with anticipation for his next releases. Whether he is on the decks or making melodies, he never fails to agitate jovial energy for his listeners. Thanks!

Refreshed and Ready

My hiatus has come to a close. After hitchhiking the length of Japan and moving back to the US, I've decided that I will only post tracks that an artist sends me, allows me to post, and mixes that I personally make or other artists make. I love this music and the artists that make it so much that I don't think it is fair to post MP3s of their work without their consent. So from now, I'll post mixes, lists, and MP3s I've been given the OK to post. I also think that I'll be focusing on house and techno music because there are loads of cosmic blogs that cover the genre so well.

More Canadian Love: Jade - I'm Gonna Get Your Love (Disconet Edit)

Since I didn't get to spend the prime of my life in the late 70's or early 80's, all I can do is imagine what life would have been like for an American disco DJ. If Gino Soccio was going to be the soundtrack to kick off a week, then Nancy (Martin) Martinez's, 'I'm Gonna Get Your Love', would be the tune to kick off a night of partying. The typical night of an early eighties DJ is quite livid in my mind: Jade's heavy drums and synths blaring from a '82 'vette on the way to the club, taking each corner like Burt Reynolds in Cannon Ball Run, only pausing to look in the rear view mirror and brush crumbs of Columbia's finest from a thick black mustache. Do you know how those typical nights would end? After setting the disco off it's roof by spinning a special set of tunes sent to via a Disconet subscription, the DJ would retire to the mansion for an after party that would make Cesar stiff in his grave. Who would have thought that so much of the party came from Canada?

Gino Soccio - Try it Out

I'm thinking about setting Gino Soccio's 'Try it Out' as my alarm chime for Mondays. If I woke up to that bass line and Ema Shaw's uplifting vocals every week, I'd be a much happier person. The bass alone could get anyone to strut out their house, grin from ear to ear, feeling as if the week were going to be funky as hell and nothing could touch them. A great thing about being born toward the end of disco era is I'm getting to rediscover some timeless music and learn some tidbits of dance music history. Aside from a decent health care system, the Canadians also had some good disco and producers. Gino wasn't a small timer back in the day. This Montreal based musician produced chart toppers on a regular basis; yet, at a few years shy of 30, Gino and Canadian disco is news to me.

Five20East - OOFT & Revenge

I don't remember how I came across the OOFT blog a few months ago, but I do remember what struck me: They are damn pretentious. Who in their right mind is going to fuck with Marvin Gaye, Willie Hutch, or Mr. Fingers? Well, these seedy bastards and their crew take them head on, and do it better than most could wish for. Most of the tunes, re-rubbed in a deep way, add to or emphasize the original's sexy beat, but resist enough to leave the sensitive and soulful elements that made them so lovely in the first place. The Loft/Five20East LTD crew are creating top shelf edits for the dance floor. They push tracks toward the deeper end of house, yet savor the essence and uplift the listener. This is a new label and new artists to watch out for!

Track: Marvin Gaye - Funky Space Reincarnation (OOFT music mix)
Track: Willie Hutchins - Brothers Gonna Work It Out (Revenge rework)

Sideshow - African Cheri[Aus]

Can we get deeper? This is a dubbed out tune that will send you out of your mind. This has something to do with Ninja Tune, Stephan Goldmann, and German techno. Read this review if you'd like more information and some great adjectives.

Baldelli - Waka Kossa [Cosmic Sound]

I'm feeling the deep, percussive house at the moment. Here is a selection from a Baldelli compilation, Cosmic Sound, which are hard to come by. If you don't know Baldelli, the Italian disco god, then the Pope will damn you to disco hell. You cannot be saved! There are a couple of these comps out there and all the tunes are orgasmic.

Mountain People - 03 [Mountain People]

I wasn't a big fan of Mountain People's first release, but this mysterious Swiss label and production unit has a dynamite sophomore on the market. An addictive, deep percussion A side and Theo Parishesque B side!

The Exile Missile - Sidewinder [Brontosaurus]

While looking for new music at Clone, quite an aural beast plopped it's funky ass in my lap. Brontosaurus, a recent house/nu disco label out of Germany, packs a lot of punch with just a few releases. Arto Mwambe, whose "Shake the Doom" I've yet to get purchase, came to light by skimming a 'top pics' Prins T. list on Clone. Mwambe makes potent house music, but I have since become enamored with an earlier Bront. release, The Exile Missile EP. Sprinkled with cosmic and balearic bits here and there, Sidewinder is a funk inspired EP with live sounding drums banging about. The tracks, Maverick and a Sidewinder remix by Fabrizio Mamarella, make every groove on this EP a monster on the dance floor.

LoveNotes 6-07

Here is a first attempt at a mix for the blog. Since the attention spans of web surfers last as long as it takes for a page to load, the mixes will be short. This one got a little long, but most of the tracks are left intact so that listeners can get a good taste. All the tracks are straight forward: no effects (OK...a little delay here and there), kills, or deceptive mixing skills. Except for a little tempo change, the tracks should sound the same as they do on the record. The tools used are Torq, X-Session Pro, Rapid Evolution, Audacity. Post-mix editing skills are still rough. Audacity is a in-depth, free editing program that takes time to get used to. If you find DJing alluring but aren't prepared to invest all the cash right away, look into Torq and watch the tutorial videos, and ask questions on the forum. Other DVS systems include Traktor, Serato, and Mix Vibes. All DVS (Digital Vinyl System) programs offer something a little different, so research well. Here is an article explaining what a DVS is and what to consider before purchasing.
